The popularity and participation in Flat Track Roller Derby has recently exploded. In the upper mid-west, more than 17 leagues (over 41 teams) are currently operating with more forming each month.
The HARBOR CITY ROLLER DAMES league, based out of the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin, is the region's first and only women's flat track roller derby league! Founded in January 2007 by Melissa LaTour (Ginger Suicide #XXX), a major fan and supporter of women's flat-track roller derby leagues in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and elsewhere. It was Ginger who initiated the endeavor of bringing the exciting and challenging sport of roller derby to the Northland - not an easy undertaking by any means!
Now, several years later, HCRD has hosted interleague bouts at various venues, such as, Superior's World of Wheels Skate Center, Wessman Arena and The Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. HCRD events have included skaters, officials and volunteers from 9 leagues, 4 states and 2 countries. including Minnesota Roller Girls, North Star Roller Girls, and the Twin Cities Terrors men's league. HCRD has also been on the road, traveling to bout teams in Fargo, ND, Davenport, IA, La Crosse and Appleton, WI!
HCRD is owned, managed, and operated entirely by our dedicated skaters. Aspiring to the standards of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, our league is open to all women skaters who are age 19+, no matter your shape, size, style, or present skating skill. You must be female to play the game, but men are welcome to volunteer for positions such as referees or non-skating officials. You must be age 18+ for these positions.
As a league, we also work to give back to our community by making donations and taking part in events that benefit charitable organizations in the area. We are extremely proud of the money and time we have been able to donate to several worthy causes in the area, and we look forward to the opportunity to do the same for many other causes in the future!
Team practices are held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. at the World of Wheels Skate Center, 1218 Oakes Avenue, Superior, WI. Practices are not open to the general public, but prospective skaters/volunteers are welcome to stop in and meet with one of our league representatives. For more information call 218-348-0705, leave a message for a league representative to contact you.
